redsn0w 0.9.10b6 Tutorial

Unsure what jailbreak to use? Click here to find out.

If you would like, feel free to watch this tutorial in video form.

redsn0w is one of the longest running jailbreaking programs and is still going strong on it’s latest 0.9.10b6 release. redsn0w is a simple to use jailbreak that should take just a few minutes from start to finish to complete.

This is a tethered jailbreak for some devices on iOS 5.1. To find out which jailbreak is best for your device the Guide has info on all models of the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. As with all jailbreaks it is highly recommended that you connect your device to iTunes and let it sync to back up all of your data or be sure your iCloud backup is up to date. You should not lose any data in the jailbreak but there’s always a chance that something could go wrong so it’s always a good idea to be safe.

To start with you will need to download redsn0w 0.9.10b6 for either Windows or Mac.

At this point you need to put your device into DFU mode. It’s a simple process from here and redsn0w will walk you through it. You will need to hold the power button for three seconds, the power and home buttons together for ten seconds and finally the home button by itself for fifteen seconds. If you drop a button or mistime something just let your device boot normally and try again.

redsn0w 0.9.10b6 Options Select

At this point redsn0w will ask you to select your options. The most important thing is to keep the Install Cydia option checked, everything else is up to you. Not all options are available on all devices however so let me briefly explain what each does.

  • Install Cydia – Installs Cydia, the main package installer for jailbroken devices
  • Install custom bundle – Allows you to install a custom bundle
  • Enable battery percentage – Enables the numeric battery percentage
  • Enable multitask gestures – Enables the use of four or five finger gestures to control multitasking

Once you have selected the options you would like, click Next. You will see lines of code appear on your device and the pwnapple boot logo while your device is being jailbroken so just be patient. It can take several minutes until your device completes and reboots normally. After redsn0w finishes up you will now see Cydia on your device. However it will have a white icon and crash immediately after loading so we aren’t done yet.

Go back to the redsn0w splash screen and select Extras. Click on Just Boot. As this is a tethered jailbreak you will need to do this every single time you need to reboot your device. Enter DFU mode like before and give your device a few minutes to boot up.
