Knowing how to SSH can be very useful with a jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch or iPad as it allows you full access to the filesystem of your device. This can be helpful for loading custom Winterboard themes, ROMs for emulators and much more.

This tutorial assumes that you have both a Windows XP or later Windows computer and an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer.

The first step is to prepare your jailbroken device. This is very simple, all you need to do is go to Cydia then search for and download OpenSSH.

Now you’ll need to go over to your Windows computer and download and install WinSCP. Once it’s installed open it up and click New.

Now you’ll need to come back to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Open the Settings app then navigate to Wi-Fi then click on the blue arrow beside your Wi-Fi network. Once you do this you will see information about your current network. Disregard all of this except for the IP address. This is what you’ll need to enter into WinSCP.

Now you’ll need to enter the IP address into WinSCP where it asks for Host Name. Next enter ‘root’ into the User Name field and ‘alpine’ into the Password field. alpine is the default password however if you have changed it before then you’ll need to put in the updated password. Now click Login.

If you have any problems just make sure all of your info is correct and try again. If you get any kind of error or warning on your first connection just accept, that’s normal. Now you should be presented with a window like the screenshot below, that’s it. Congratulations, you have now successfully set up SSH access on your device.
